Q: How do I get a permit for a New York State owned property?
A: Please call the Locations Director at 212-803-2330 for the appropriate State contact. There are many different agencies within New York and the contact for permits depends upon the property you are interested in. Be prepared to share the name of the project, dates of the shoot, number of people, number of vehicles and any other pertinent information. Though we are not the permitting entity, we are usually called upon to facilitate the permitting process.
Q: Are there properties owned by New York State that are film-friendly?
A: We work to make New York State as film-friendly as possible. There are many State-owned, properties available including bridges, tunnels, subways, airports, etc. and even properties right here in New York City like Governor's Island and Battery Park City. Some locations are more film-friendly than others, so fee free to call us at 212-803-2330 for some suggestions and referrals.
Q: Do you have information on Location fees?
A: Location fees vary from location to location and project to project, so it is very difficult to track. In any case you should realistically expect to pay for all direct expenses incurred by your project filming on any property – like electricity, security, etc. And we always say – everything is negotiable, don’t be afraid to ask.
Q: Is filming allowed in State parks?
A: Yes. Hundreds of film, television and commercial projects are filmed in New York’s beautiful State parks every year. Please call our office at 212-803-2330 to find out the appropriate contact for the park in which you are interested.
Q: I'm having trouble finding a location, can you help?
A: Yes we can. We happen to have a most excellent Location Library – that expands every week! Hours are Monday-Friday 9:30-5, please call us to let us know when you’d like to come in. (212-803-2330) No appointment time is necessary, we just need your name for security purposes.
However, if you are looking for a very specific and/or unique location, then please call first. In most cases, we can send you a list of contacts and/or specific images.
Q: How can I offer my property as a film location? How do I make my property available to filmmakers?
A: List it with our office! We currently have over 100,000 images from across the state in our location library. Click
here
for details on how to best photograph your property. There is no charge to list your property, but please note we only accept properties located in New York State.
Q: I’m interested in shooting a film on the subway. How do I go about doing that?
A: New York City’s public transportation systems are the busiest in the world. Obtaining permission to shoot on the New York City Subways is not always practicable and it is important to remain flexible with such a request. Call our office at 212-803-2330 and we will put you in touch with the appropriate contact at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). Be prepared to provide appropriate insurance and indemnification if asked.
Q: Where can I get stock footage of NYC?
A: There are many stock footage and still photography companies listed in www.nypg.com or www.newyork411.com that will be able to provide you with stock footage of New York.
